Jura X Konrad Borkowski

“Jura is a constant source of inspiration”

Konrad Borkowski is Jura’s beloved resident photographer. His island gallery sits right by the beach, just a short distance from the distillery, and is packed full of incredible shots of Jura and the neighbouring islands. Konrad has an incredible ability to capture the natural beauty of Jura – and its inhabitants – and provides a unique perspective of life on the island.

Like many photographers, Konrad was first inspired to pick up a camera thanks to the pages of National Geographic magazine. The images sparked something within him, and he was drawn to the idea of capturing the world through the lens of a camera. However, it was during a chance visit to Jura back in 1999 that a real turning point came:

"I was impressed by the island’s rugged landscapes and natural light. Since then, I’ve dedicated a lot of time to learning and experimenting, and it’s been an ongoing journey of growth and discovery."

We caught up with Konrad to hear a little more about his story.

Getting to know

Konrad Borkowski

  • Being part of the Jura community means being in a small, supportive network where people genuinely care for and inspire one another. It’s a place where neighbours, local artists, and friends share ideas and help each other out, making daily life both creative and connected.

I also appreciate how this close-knit environment continually offers fresh perspectives and practical support. This really sparks new ideas in me constantly and drives me to evolve both creatively and personally. It’s really wonderful to be a part of.

  • Jura is a constant source of inspiration. Its dramatic landscapes and shifting light create a naturally beautiful setting for photography. Whether it’s the wide coastal views or the quiet spots tucked away in rugged terrain, the island always offers fresh scenes and moods, making every shot feel genuine and unique.

What I love about photography on the west coast of Scotland is the way it allows me to capture the constantly shifting light across the scenery. I like to blend these elements together, creating unique and dynamic images that highlight the beauty of both the natural world and the people in it.

  • Living on Jura has really reshaped my approach to photography and business. In a small, remote community of around 250 people, I've learned the value of close, personal connections and the importance of taking time to notice the beauty in everyday details.

The stunning, unspoiled landscape here pushes me to create images that feel genuine and true to the island’s character, and my clients appreciate that authentic, personal touch. Each new sunrise brings a fresh chance to uncover hidden beauty, fuelling a creative process that mirrors the ever-changing spirit of the island.

  • Jura is a peaceful retreat where nature’s beauty takes centre stage. For a first-time visitor, I’d recommend heading to the west coast. There, you’ll encounter expansive ocean views and rugged rock formations, where the island’s serene appeal stands in striking contrast to its frequently stormy skies and restless seas, leaving a memorable impression long after you leave.
