MEET SAM

Meet Sam

Our Jura Brand Home Manager

Originally from the far north of England, Sam served in the military until 2003 and worked in corporate security for investment banks for the next 15 years. He came to the whisky industry through a keen interest in food and drink, sparked by his international travels as well as the influence of his father and grandfather, who both drank whisky and passed on an understanding and appreciation of different malts and ages.

In 2017, Sam visited Jura from London to run the Jura Fell Race. He and his wife Roxy fell in love with the island. Then, they spotted a house was for sale…

Fast-forward to early 2021, and Sam, Roxy and their daughter Freya moved to Jura full-time. After working at Ruantallain Estate for just under two years, Sam joined the distillery in late 2022.

As Brand Home Manager, Sam looks after our visitor experience at the distillery. Whether he’s showing you round our distillery, guiding you in tasting our incredible whiskies, or organising for you to hike a pap or explore Jura’s local businesses, Sam and his team are serious about making your trip to the island unforgettable. You can book tours and tastings with Sam and his team here.

Sam is also passionate about finding new ways to benefit the local community through the distillery’s activities.

Outside of Jura Whisky, he is a volunteer with the Jura Coastguard and a founding member of JamDram, the Jura Amateur Dramatics Theatre Company. When he’s not busy with all that, he enjoys fell running, taking his daughter canoeing in Small Isles Bay, fishing, doing DIY and enjoying a dram in Jura’s only pub.

"My favourite part of living on Jura? Clean air, unbelievable beauty and access to really good local produce. All tied together with like-minded people who look after each other. I think of Jura as the Alaska of the UK. It has quite a frontier feel, which brings out people’s resilience and self-sufficiency. The community spirit is brilliant. It’s an exciting place to live."
